Plan A Last Minute Mother’s Day Luncheon
-->
If you’re like many people, you love your mother, but you don’t have a lot of time! If Mother’s Day this year crept up on you, or maybe you had reservations and they fell through, it’s now 10AM and you’re at a loss on where to go, what to do and mom is at the door!
Mother’s Day in England is a hold-over from Mothering Sunday, a time when young men and women who had started their trades would be allowed to go home and visit their families. In the United States, Mother’s Day came from a peace movement in the early twentieth century. In any case, in either holiday, it has become a tradition to take your mother out to brunch and bring her flowers.
There’s nothing quite like the sinking feeling that you’ve got when your Mother’s Day plans are derailed, or never existed in the first place, but never fear! There’s a lot you can still do and with any luck, no one will note that you’ve skipped a beat.
The first thing to do is do a quick call-around to the places you would usually go to brunch. There might be a cancellation that you can slip in on, or perhaps they still have a table available. It’s always worth calling to check. Even if you can’t get in to the restaurant proper, ask if the restaurant will give you a few to-go boxes of goodies. Then you can take your mother out and surprise her with a picnic! Depending on the May weather, you might want to go outside and sit in a park, or perhaps stay indoors and enjoy your meal far away from the crowds.
If this doesn’t pan out, you might as well go all out and check on the unusual options that are available to you. The best way to do this is to keep your mother’s tastes and preferences in mind while still trying to give her something new an memorable.
For instance, if your mother has a passion for China or Japan, consider springing for a noodle place or a sushi bar to take her to. Typically, these restaurants are under-crowded and peaceful during what turns out to be a rush for most places.
Also, if you have a favorite place to eat, consider trying to share that with your mother, even if it is a bit unusual. Is there a bar or pub you frequent that will be a bit of adventure for her? Consider taking her for a walk on the wild side!
Take advantage of any extras the place you go to is willing to offer. See if the staff ever sings, or if there are any specials that you can arrange. It might be a little over the top, but cake or pastries with “Mom” written on them in icing is always a sweet thought!
No matter what your situation is on Mother’s Day, don’t worry. Just remember these suggestions and they’ll make you think of great ideas of your own. We’re certain your mother will love it!
